Western Capitals sign Waugh

The Summerside Western Capitals have signed defenceman Lincoln Waugh, the team announced Saturday via Facebook.

Waugh, 20, returns to the Capitals after spending the last two season with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) where he scored two goals in 12 points in 67 games from 2024 to 2026. 

The Summerside native spent the last half of the 2023-24 season with the Capitals, appearing in 19 games and scoring three goals and 15 points while adding an additional four assists in 17 playoff games in which the Capitals lost in the finals to the Miramichi Timberwolves.

Prior to joining the Capitals in 2023-24, the five-foot-10, 179-pound frame played 18 games with the Cape Breton Eagles of the QMJHL and scored two goals and three points. 

Waugh played with the Capitals in the 2022-23 season, picking up eight goals and 25 points in 50 games while adding one assist in nine playoff games. He also appeared in five games for the Eagles.

Waugh was originally drafted the Western Capitals in the seventh round, 84th overall in the 2022 MHL Entry Draft. He was also selected in the third round, 48th overall by Cape Breton in the 2022 QMJHL Entry Draft.

There has been some news that has been missed while I was on my honeymoon vacation, so here are the missed headlines.

Sim to attend Regiment training camp

Summerside Western Capitals forward Lane Sim has been invited to and will attend the training camp of the Newfoundland Regiment of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

Sim, 19, scored three goals and 10 points in 16 games with the Capitals this past season while adding an additional two goals and four points in 14 playoff games. In seven games at the 2026 Centennial Cup, Sim added two goals for four points.

The New Glasgow, N.S., native also spent the 2025-26 season with the Vernon Vipers of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) where he scored three goals and five points in 26 games. He also also skated with the Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL as well as the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

The Newfoundland Regiment is holding its training camp at the Gerard ‘Turk’ Gallant Arena in Summerside from Aug. 19-23.

Hendry signs in B.C.

Defenceman Alex Hendry won’t be returning to the Summerside Western Capitals for the 2026-27 season as he has signed with the Victoria Grizzlies of the BCHL. 

The Victoria Grizzlies announced the news via Facebook on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old, Milton, Ont., native scored three goals and eight points in 43 games with the Capitals last season. Despite going pointless in 14 playoff games, Hendry added two assists in seven games at the 2026 Centennial Cup. Prior to joining the Capitals, Hendry skated with the Wellington Dukes of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) during the 2024-25 season and scored two goals and 14 points in 43 games.

Capitals trade Cam Griffin, acquire rights to goaltender Madgett

The Summerside Western Capitals have traded 2026 territorial pick Cam Griffin to the Miramichi Timberwolves, in exchange for the rights to goaltender Sam Madgett.

The Capitals announced the news Wednesday via Facebook. 

Griffin, who turns 18 in September, was selected by the Capitals with their second territorial pick in the 2026 MHL Entry Draft in June. The Summerside native played the last two seasons with the Kensington Wild Under-18 AAA where he scored 34 goals and 72 points in 73 games.

Griffin is the younger brother of Carson Griffin, who the Capitals traded to Miramichi back in June.

Madgett, 19, appeared in four games with the Lloydminster Bobcats of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) where he posted a 2-2 (won-lost) record with a 2.77 goals against average and a 0.822 save percentage. He then joined the Mooseheads as their third-strong goaltender but never played a game.

The Stillwater Lake, N.S., native was a 10th round pick of the Halifax Mooseheads in the 2023 QMJHL Entry Draft.

Western Capitals add goaltender Gladu

The Summerside Western Capitals have signed goaltender Vincent Gladu, the team announced via Facebook on Saturday.

The 19-year-old spent the 2025-26 season with the Charlottetown Islanders and the Rimouski Oceanic of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) where he posted a combined 2-14 (won-lost) record in 19 games with a 5.85 goals against average and a 0.844 save percentage.

In three QMJHL seasons, the Mascouche, Que., native has posted a 13-30 record, a 4.16 goals against average with a 0.872 save percentage with two shutouts in 48 total games spent with Blainville-Boisbriand, Charlottetown and Rimouski. His QMJHL rights are currently owned by the Victoriaville Tigres.

The Western Capitals now have two goaltenders on its protected list with one season or more of QMJHL experience with Justin Robinson and now, Gladu.

Summerside kicks off its training camp Wednesday August 26 at 6 p.m. AST at the Gerard 'Turk' Gallant arena.

Capitals add McCarthy to coaching staff

The Summerside Western Capitals have hired former player Brendan McCarthy as an assistant coach, the team announced Thursday.

McCarthy played one season with the Western Capitals, capturing the MHL championship in 2022. During his Capitals' tenure, McCarthy scored 10 goals for 22 points in 35 games, while adding two assists in 14 playoff games. He also appeared in 37 games with the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League. The St. John's, N.L., native then went on to play for York University Lions of USports Hockey.

Prior to joining the Capitals' coaching staff, McCarthy has worked with Power Conditioning Inc. as an Assistant Director and as a strength and conditioning coach. 

His is currently pursuing his MBA in Global Leadership at the University of Prince Edward Island.

McCarthy joins Head Coach Billy McGuigan and assistant coach Tim Schurman behind the bench for the upcoming 2026-27 season.

Western Capitals hire Thompson as goaltending coach

The Summerside Western Capitals have hired Kiefer Thompson as the team's new goaltending coach, the team announced on Saturday, August 1.

A native of Summerside, P.E.I., Thompson played minor hockey in Prince County and suited up for both the Kensington Wild and the Charlottetown Knights (Under-18 Major Midget) after developing at the Ontario Hockey Academy.

In 2021, Thompson was a territorial pick of the Western Capitals at the MHL Draft and was also a sixth-round pick of the Moncton Wildcats at the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League Entry Draft.

Thompson ended his playing career due to injury and has since worked with Hockey P.E.I., State of Mind Goaltending, Atlantic Hockey Group, Brave Athletic Performance and the Western Rebels Under-16 AAA.

In other staff related news, former Western Capitals Athletic Therapist Megan Drouin has been hired by the Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL. With the departure of Drouin, the Western Capitals have posted a job for an athletic therapist.
